"They [Vasco Nuñez & Co] had now arrived in the territory of a
cacique at war with Ponca, and who set upon the Spaniards with a
numerous body of warriors, thinking, on account of their small number,
that he was secure of a victory. On the first discharge of their
firearms, however, he had reason to alter his opinion, his people
being forced to hasty flight, leaving the cacique and six hundred men
dead upon the field."
