'The thing that really set me on a course of getting a PhD was
Sputnik. I was sitting in a class in October 1957 & Milet Morgan
walked in the class & announced that Russia has just launched
Sputnik & that it weighted 56 lb & our satellite won't be available
for another 6 months & it was only gonna weight 8 lb. He explained
the difference in a rocket power required to launch 56 lb satellite
as compared to 8 lb satellite & how far we were behind. I just
decided that anybody, who had any scientific ability at all, owned
to the country to learn how to use it & save the country as the
result of that.'
