Multiplan
Latest update:
Before Excel, Microsoft had a spreadsheet app called Multiplan. During
the first Apple Macintosh release in 1984, MS ported its Excel
predecessor to the brand new Apple System 1 OS.
Multiplan 1.00 had R1C1-style notation!
v1.00 wasn't a particularly rushed endeavour. According to Gates's
inverview in 1984:
'Microsoft's Multiplan was running over a year and a half ago on the
Mac … We thought we'd be finished with that product in a few months,
and in fact everyone's schedules were overly optimistic. But the
product has evolved since then.'
Nevertheless, MacWorld (May/June 1984 issue) printed a hilarious
letter to the editor:
Multiplan Warning
There appears to be a serious bug in version 1.00 of Microsoft's
Multiplan. Don't use the "shortcut" method to save your document: if
you choose Quit from the File menu and rely on the alert box to ask to
save changes, your worksheet will be permanently garbled.
