Multiplan

Latest update:

Before Excel, Microsoft had a spreadsheet app called Multiplan. During the first Apple Macintosh release in 1984, MS ported its Excel predecessor to the brand new Apple System 1 OS.

Multiplan 1.00 had R1C1-style notation!

v1.00 wasn't a particularly rushed endeavour. According to Gates's inverview in 1984:

'Microsoft's Multiplan was running over a year and a half ago on the Mac … We thought we'd be finished with that product in a few months, and in fact everyone's schedules were overly optimistic. But the product has evolved since then.'

Nevertheless, MacWorld (May/June 1984 issue) printed a hilarious letter to the editor:

Multiplan Warning

There appears to be a serious bug in version 1.00 of Microsoft's Multiplan. Don't use the "shortcut" method to save your document: if you choose Quit from the File menu and rely on the alert box to ask to save changes, your worksheet will be permanently garbled.

We contacted Microsoft and they confirmed this bug.
